Haki is born with every living thing. However, not every living thing ever awaken it. Through hard training or severe shock haki can be awaken. Haki represents how strong a living creatures spirit is. It is an extension of the normal senses that a living creature already holds. There three types of haki, which are kenbunshoku haki, busoshoku haki, and haoshoku haki.
Kenbunshoku Haki
With this ability the user can sense the presence of other living things even if they are out of sight. It is easier to sense someone with a higher killer intent. Even though the user can predict what others can do does not mean he/she can automatically dodge the technique. In order to dodge a technique the user's speed must be higher than the other person you are fighting. The user cannot predict a movement if the other person does not know where the attacks are landing. With enough mastery a user can sense the emotions of others as well as how strong they are. If a living creature is inside another the user cannot sense both of their presence, only the one that is not inside.
Busoshoku Haki
A person imbuing their techniques can increase the strength of their attacks. Aside from hardening a users own body, he/she can harden weapons. By enhancing attacks with this type of haki the abilities granted by a devil fruit such as intangibility or a rubber like body can be bypass and harm the user. This does not null the devil fruit powers like sea stone prism allowing a devil fruit user to still continue using their powers even if in contact with busoshoku haki. A user can also harden their body parts for defensive purposes and protect against other strong attacks. By having a higher busoshoku haki than the person you are fighting you can bypass their hardening haki, the same works the other way around.
Haoshoku Haki
It is an ability that only one in a million people can use. Out of all three it is the only one that cannot be trained, it is reliant on the users spirit. A person with this ability can knock out those with a weak spirit unconscious. In order to knock out someone the user must have a greater spirit than the person/s he/she is trying to knock out. If the difference in spirit is not great enough the a person will not be knocked unconscious and it will be like nothing happened.
